How to make your room feel effortlessly cohesive

If you search for ways to make a room feel cohesive, you’ll find endless blog posts and expert tips. It’s a topic that keeps popping up because creating a harmonious, well-balanced home is never simple—but it’s also deeply satisfying. Here, I’m sharing my personal approach to designing a room that feels cohesive, comfortable, and true to your style. These are my practical, hands-on interior design tips—and I’ll be adding more insights as I go along.

1 | Identify what doesn’t work and why

Before thinking about furniture or colors, my advice is to step back and consider what isn’t working in the room first. Is it too dark, too busy, or a mix of conflicting styles? Or perhaps it’s too neutral, with pieces blending into the overall scheme. Understanding what feels off is the first step to creating a harmonious, cohesive space.

2 | Focus on how you want to feel. Itʻs more important than how it will look

Think of how you would like to feel in that room and what you would like to be able to do in it. A room’s atmosphere matters as much as its appearance. Do you want it to feel cosy, functional, sophisticated, or a personal retreat just for you? Take a walk around your home and notice your favourite spaces. Why do you love them? Make a list of five adjectives that describe the mood you want to create. This will guide your choices for furniture, colours and layouts.

3 | Gather inspiration from everyday life

Pinterest can be great, but inspiration doesn’t have to come from online boards alone. But there are other ways I quite enjoy.  Take a cuppa and a few minutes off your busy day and have a look at your closet. Linger on the predominant colour of your clothes and accessories and let any favourite fabric, print, texture or even a scarf be your inspiration. Take a walk, visit an exhibition, or spend time in nature. Art, magazines, and local shops can also spark ideas. By observing what draws your attention in everyday life, you’ll find unique inspirations that feel personal and authentic.

4 | Be selective about where you shop

It’s tempting and time-efficient to buy everything from a single store, but that can make a room feel staged and lose the personal touch you were aiming for.

I encourage you to start by listing your favourite stores and decide which pieces truly need to come from them and which you can source elsewhere. Choose your statement items—a luxury sofa, a designer lamp—and build the room around them. Then, complement with pieces from second-hand shops, charities, local artisans or car boot sales. A curated mix adds character and ensures your space feels genuinely lived-in rather than like a showroom.

5 | Introduce the unexpected

Cohesion doesn’t mean predictability. The magic lies in balancing harmony with spontaneity. Unexpected details—an art book left open on a favourite page, a vase of fresh flowers, an upcycled lamp, bring personality and atmosphere. Place them with casual intention around your home, think of creative ways to re-purpose them so they continue to surprise you and make the space feel alive.

Love the idea but donʻt know where to start? A consultation is a great way to gain confidence and keep the enjoyment. Starting is simple, just a conversation.
